Staircases are subject to special legal regulations, as they serve as escape route. The general transport safety must be granted, too.

A proof of stability is, therefore, essential for staircases.

As long as certain regulations are taken into account, artisan timber staircases, such as the traditional string stairs, can be built without building inspection certificate of approval. However, all other types – e.g. bolt stairs, open rise stairs, or in fact FOLDED PLATE STAIRS – require a certificate.

Certificate of Approval

The general building inspection certificate of approval is granted by the “deutsches Institut für
Bautechnik” (DIBt) (the German Institute for Building Technology) in Berlin, and guarantees the customer an inspected and certified stability. Elaborate breaking tests are followed by complex static calculations, which then constitute the basis for a theoretical safety evidence of each of the tested stair types.

Before deciding to acquire a FOLDED PLATE STAIR, the customer ought to assure himself of the building inspection certificate of approval for exactly the staircase type which he/she has been offered. The staircase constructor must be in the possession of at least one valid licence for the folded plate stairs offered. This is proof of an extensive training in construction and installation.
